Live & Current: The First Live Installation

Sheila Gamble
The Art Guild of Pacifica’s latest show at Oceana Gallery in Eureka Square is called “Live & Current”.  The art on the gallery walls was completed most recently; hence it is “Current”.  “Live” refers to art installations done over several weekends by artists in the gallery itself leading up to the “Live” opening on Friday, August 17.  I was gallery sitting on Sunday, July 29, 2012, when a big part of the first live installation in this innovative show was put into place.

Sheila Gamble has been associated with AGP and the Sanchez Art Center for a long time. In the early 80’s, she and other artists brought art workshops into the Pacifica school system, and had studio space before it was largely used.  Now as a teacher, she continues to bring creativity to her students with great passion, and coordinates the green science program where she teaches. This is where her “Coral Reef” was first created.

Sheila & Rig
The “Coral Reef” was inspired by an exhibition at the Smithsonian National Museum called “The Hyperbolic Crotchet Coral Reef”.  Artists Margaret and Christine Wertheim “have created an exhibition that combines the mathematics of hyperbolic geometry with the delicateness of this traditionally women’s handicraft. The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef is a traveling exhibition that not only displays these artworks, but also incorporates an ever-growing social project—teaching others around the world how to crochet hyperbolically and make their own reefs.” <source>.   Gaining inspiration from this important art, Sheila and the students, families, and teachers at Ocean Shore Elementary crocheted the coral pieces in this exhibition, making it truly a community project.  It decorated the hallways at Ocean Shore for several weeks.

Coral made from plastic bags!
Every interesting bit of coral in Sheila’s exhibition is hand-made and different, created with many kinds of yarn.  Looking closely is a treat for the eyes.  Most notably, sections of coral and other connective pieces are crocheted out of plastic bags.  You have to feel this in your fingers to appreciate the texture, but the irony certainly wasn’t lost on me.  I vote that we use plastic bags for art rather than sticking them in our landfill or having them blow aimlessly about town!  Sheila Gamble’s “Coral Reef”, the very first live exhibition in “Live & Current”, carries a message about our responsibility to the world’s coral reefs and oceans, whose resources are limited.  She will add finishing touches over the week of July 30, and we’ll be sure to include a photo of the finished display … or, be encouraged to visit the exhibition yourself during open gallery hours!

Jana
This innovative “show within a show” approach to AGP’s Gallery Exhibition is the brainchild of AGP’s Oceana Committee including Rig Terrel, Jana Nesbit (shown assisting in the installation) and Daniele Derenzi.  The “Live” opening is Friday, August 17, 2012 at the Oceana Gallery from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Sheila’s latest work entitled “Jelly (Fish) I” is also on display in the gallery, as well.  See more photos on flickr.
